Marie Détrée
Marie was born in 1973 and she has always loved the sea: her father and grandfather were sailors and passed on to her their love for travel and adventure.
In the Saint-Malo family house (Brittany) she spent the best part of her time drawing boats, islands, shores and that’s why, naturally, she chose an artistic career. She graduated from the famous « Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts de Paris » in 1999.
After having proved her mettle, a few years later, in 2010, she was awarded the prestigious title of « Peintre officiel de la Marine ».
Official Painters of the French Navy represent an Institution created in France, in 1830, by King Louis-Philippe. From the beginning, their main purpose has been participating in naval operations, discovery missions, studying and representing landscapes, coastal scenes, and seamen at work, wildlife and flora through paintings, drawings or prints.
Official Painters of the French Navy receive no remuneration from the Ministry of Defence. Their sole obligation is to participate every two years in the “Salon de la Marine” which is held at the Musée de la Marine in Paris. The only privilege granted to them is to be able to add an anchor to their works by their signature.
In 2010, following her trips and thanks to her experience, Marie wrote a book about the particular world of the Navy, La grande ménagerie du bord , published by Chasse-Marée/Glénat, and in 2015, Bateaux en Bouteille, published by Tutti-Frutti.
In 2017, she illustrates Pour un Embarquement, published by Cent Mille Milliard, about customs in the Navy.
